Becoming a Teacher
Becoming a teacher is such a pleasure and a great honor. I remember wanting to be a teacher when I was in 2nd grade. I use to play with teddy bears and had my own clipboard just like my teachers. With my clipboard I would write each of my stuffed animal’s name and I would check if they were absent or not. Handing out quizzes from the back of my clipboard was very exciting and I remembered some of my favorite teddy bears failed the math quiz. It was heart breaking when someone failed. I want to become a teacher, because I know it will bring a great joy for me to actually have real students to teach and develop a new relationship with each class, every year.
Throughout my education in my earlier years, I was very quiet and caused trouble without getting caught. My kindergarten teacher told me a story in my 8th grade graduation she told me about how I had cut, and glued a girl’s hair without any shame. I just could not believe the trouble I caused as a kid. My experience as a student has a great effect for future references. I learned from myself that every student is different and just because someone is quiet it doesn’t mean she does nothing wrong.
In middle school, my teachers gave out detentions and referrals for almost any reason, I got my first detention just because I forgot my project at home. I cried but I learned I had responsibilities in fifth grade. In grammar school I was always struggling in classes. My parents did all they could to help me study and do good to pass to the next grade. Till this day I can’t believe I’m in college. After all the terrifying, and tearful nights studying I still did not understand the material, and failed some of my tests. School for me wasn’t very easy, my parents knew more Spanish than English at the time. Things were complicated. In middle school I was always awarded with the “most improved” trophy by the end of the school year. It was always surprising to receive this reward, because I had struggled a lot throughout the school year and had forgotten about the awards by the end of the school year. Every year I started a new grade with new teacher and new lessons I stumbled a lot. With the help of great teachers I was able to progress and show improvement by making my family and myself proud. Teachers were my superheroes; they saved me from going to summer school every year. They offered me extra help during and after school, the help I received was what helped me pass. Not always did I get excellent grades until I got to high school.
I will like to teach students and overpass the requirements by also offering advices that will benefit them in the future. I would encourage students to strive to go to college and to dream big even when they do not have anyone that believes in them. I would show my students I care about every part in their lives. I love kids, and I know each child has something special to offer to this world, and I look forward to being a part of what the future holds for them. I want to be a part of children’s lives the same way my teachers were when I was younger. When I think about how I wanted to be a teacher I think about my old teachers that I admire and I hope to be just like them one day. They cared, had passion and love for their class.
When I started high school I was very unsure about what I was going to study in college. I was very surprised I even made it to high school so I tired not to think about college as much of a possibility for me after the great hardship I went through in Middle School. I wasn’t even sure I was going to graduate or complete high school. I just knew education was something expected of me. My dad went to college and graduated in Fordham University. I felt I had to go to college to make my family proud and for my own sake -- for an education and my future. I was very nervous about my career in college as a student, I didn’t want to make the wrong decision as my major. I wanted to go to college and study something I would like and put a lot of effort with heart. Soon when I was in eleventh grade I started to teach dance classes to other dancers. Thanks to Delki Rosso, my only dance teacher, mentor, and lovely boss. She gave me the opportunity to teach in House of T’heArts School and Ministry as a dance instructor. Delki believed in me so much, and now I’m a teacher like her. She encouraged me to be the best, and now I want to encourage my own students.
Once you choose to become a teacher you choose to become a part of student’s lives. Knowing that fact now I know that I can make a good or bad difference in student’s lives, this is challenging. When I become a teacher I will bring in a good vibe. I want ti become someone to talk to, and someone students can trust. I like listening when people need to talk so that would be very beneficial when a student is struggling and has no one to talk to. Making a student feel important and heard is crucial because you will be able to connect with particular students.
General concerns I have as a future teacher is being cursed at and maybe even being hurt by a student. What will happen to both of us, the student and I? How will I react? I know students don't always respect the teacher and many do not always listen to them either. Being shy is a characteristic I have some concern about but I know once I feel comfortable with the classroom and my surroundings I can get myself together with my class and I won't be nervous or shy anymore. I have great people around me that believe in me and when I believe in myself nothing can separate me from what I have in my heart to do. I have a great support team, my parents don't discourage me in anything I do, but they do advise me. My mom just wanted me to go to college and to graduate because it’s something she didn't get to do because she had me. My dad just told me how he wouldn’t have the patience to become a teacher but he’s very happy for me. I'm excited to get started with my teaching career but also a bit fearful that students might not like me and simply disrespect me and I won't be listened to when I teach. Education now in college isn’t any easier but I know it will be worth it in the long run, to become a teacher to help other students with their struggle and helping them understand various amount of subjects. Being a teacher is the job I want.
